Why climb mountains? Not always because it’s there, but because we’re not. We’re not all there. Something is missing, isn’t there? Pinocchio Syndrome is what attracts many people to mountains. People wish to use its symbolism to immunize themselves against criticism, and additionally to establish themselves as absolute symbols of human achievement – inspirational heroes, brave warriors, resolute conquerors. And the real world receives the summiteers as such, less interested in how they conquered the mountain, just that they did, less interested in who did what to get them there, just whether they got there or not.
