  1. Hmmm. Maybe they had already discussed divorce, with much screaming and anger and crying. She may have told him you can’t afford to divorce us so don’t even think about it. What an awful end.

    • Agree Pauline. There was a notable lack of SM posts, even if only of the kids, by Shanann whilst she was away and at Myrtle beach, very atypical. I also read the 2015 financials and can imagine finances were also argued over, even though the Fbk profiles tell the world that all is good and she’s looking forward to getting home to see C& the kids. No signs of a violent fight at the address found the next afternoon so I think it’s been discussed & fought over earlier. The only people authorised by the family to speak seem to be Thrive promoters but I give more credence to the stylist at S’s mom’s salon and issues of separation had been disclosed by S to her mom in the past. Neither could afford a divorce. Judging from her posts I think S would have fought tooth and nail to stay together even if he’d already checked out in his head. However, it’s possible that she had discussed the option of moving back to her parents with the kids. Throw in the scheduled HOA hearing & the gender reveal party and it was all coming to a head.

  2. One more – could Sha’nann have been spending them into oblivion? Yes, there are the student loans, the house mortgage, but really only a few medical bills, here and there. In the midst of being in over their heads, there are purchases made for furniture: $1559.69; Toys Are Us: $298.21; Nordstrom (high end clothing) $3,038.65; Macy’s (more high end clothing and household goods) $1547; Pier One: $298; Capital One Furniture Row: $2,919.08 extravagances when money is an issue

    • I think you can come to conclusions on that by looking at the posts that show purchases made before and after those June 2015 bankruptcy fillings. It would be great to check out Chris’s posts for his spending but that’s now impossible. I’m not convinced that her starting with the new MLM, six months later was the financial panacea it’s made out to be and comments about her sky-high earnings from her new job are likely to be way out.

  3. Of course she knew her marriage was in serious trouble. She took the children and left him for five weeks. That doesn’t happen in a happy marriage.

  4. Good, good question. Couples have financial issues all of the time. I’m not going to “blame the victim” but what was she actually doing about the situation? If he started to withdraw from their marriage did she do anything to work on it or did she deny it and double down promoting the patches. I don’t think you kill your children over financial issues alone. He wanted to obliterate his family, wipe them out. And afterward he sounds almost cheerful giving his front porch interview, like “whew, they’re gone.” Look at his eyes on that front porch interview – not the eyes where he’s wearing orange . His eyes are dancing like he’s happy.

    • So frustrating that we don’t have any material to speculate on his motivations other than the affair & a few comments made by his old acquaintances and what can be pieced together from his presence in her posts. So back to Shan- if you look at some of those videos & posts, I feel she would stick her head in the sand about a marriage crisis. There’s some kind of past trauma there, back in NC that includes the past marriage ( she tells all how bad it was, but no details) a period of depression & sickness. Looking at those it makes me feel that she would not give up her husband and the marriage. A recurring issue seems to be fear of failure/ try harder/just believe. I think she could be a person who could make herself believe it could blow over unless forced, eg. presented with a photo to prove his affair. (The “he has No Game” comment was interesting – infidelity doesn’t rely on Game, unless you’re a serious player. Opportunity & dissatisfaction is often enough.) Add to this a pregnancy, many women would want to continue the marriage, she’s in a very vulnerable and scary position as it is. He is guilty of all charges, I don’t doubt that but I think both have shown they’re challenged by reality, in different ways. His eyes in the interviews? I see a rabbit caught in the headlights, that aliveness spark is panic as he overloads with that unconvincing and contradictory cover story.

  5. Good insights Jen. I like that, a “rabbit caught in the headlights.” He got boxed in (or he was a caged rabbit) for months. At home anyway. He had a honey at work. If he killed the girls first, AND disposed of their bodies first, had it already been done when he was seen barbecuing all by his lonesome in the backyard? If so he was just playing a waiting game, for her to come home. Then her flight is delayed for 3 hours, which she would have texted him and told him, so he had to wait a little longer – in a scenario where the girls were killed as early as Aug. 12. Imagine that wait….

    • And he could have known about the flight delay as early as 6.23 when the other Thrivers posted about their delays. If the kids were killed earlier, it’s a very long wait, seething, plotting & panicking too perhaps, until she comes home .He has to pretend he is asleep until she finally drops off too to effect the most noiseless & struggle-free murder of Shan.

  6. I keep coming back to why the girls? He could have kept the girls and just done away with his wife (sorry to be so crass), painted a picture of his wife just leaving, and ” maybe she went back to visit her parents”? scenario. “I don’t know, she was in bed asleep when I left for work.” Leave them alone in the house “assuming” she was still alive to care for them. Yes, why not. He’d have to dispose of her quickly, around 3 a.m., then scurry back to the house and get ready for work, leaving his sleeping girls in their beds. That would have been a better plan. IF his wife was really the focus of his suppressed rage. So why the girls? Did he think his girlfriend would want to be with a man who disappeared his children too?

    • Although I don’t really believe it myself, there is the possibility that one of the children, say the youngest was killed accidentally and then it snowballed but I would expect the autopsy to show other injuries if he lost his temper-not just strangulation, suffocation. So, soon we’ll be able to eliminate that. Although he appears convincingly engaged with his children & those of her employer whilst nannying, the very fact that he could drop them in the tanks & murder one after the other means he’s somehow, at some point totally disassociated himself from them. They are now an extension of his wife & an encumbrance, he wants to be free. Only other option I can find for the eruption of Mr Hyde is that there is a threat of separation & custody with kids going back to NCarolina. Then he’d fit more easily into the family killer categories. ( This seems to be an under-researched, new and still evolving field of study. Link) Having said all that, if it’s confirmed that he also had struggles with his sexuality it would be more fuel to add to this mix. Whole load of secret lives, secrets & lies in here already – financial double life on it’s own must have created tensions.

  7. How long does it take for someone to die from manual strangulation? Interesting article here by Richard Chiu saying that it depends on a combination of technique, force, method and the target – struggling or still. I’m sure Chris Watt’s computer was seized, to see if he researched and if so, when. We know Casey researched “neck breaking.” In the Ramsey case a crude garotte combined with head blow. But if interested, here:

    • Yes it can be achieved easily, swiftly and with little struggle or noise if prepared and possibly researched. Long time to find out that, from his search history. I recall he was interested in sports but I don’t remember if that including wrestling but maybe choke-hold risks on adults don’t even need much internet research these days.

  8. I’m embarrassed that I just focused on his arms and hands, which he used to hug himself and tuck away, on the porch video, and missed the neck scratch. I think I saw it and thought it was a pimple or something. Anyway, he would have had visible scratches and nicks on his arms I would think if he came from behind her and tried a choke hold. Since we don’t see scratches or nicks on his arms, she was likely lying down and he pressed his fingers into her wind pipe. But you see if he killed the girls first, he wouldn’t have choked her in her sleep, checking on her girls would be the first thing she would do upon returning home. Anyway, I can move on from this but thanks Jen for your comments.
